My Wife's Trained Goldfish

By Jim Green

Goldfish have a seven second memory according to some experts. I don't believe them because my wife trains goldfish. Not professionally, just by happenstance.

She currently has four goldfish, two gold, two white, that she affectionately calls "the boys." They live outside in one of her ponds during the summer, and inside in a large aquarium during the winter.

She has trained "the boys" to recognize her and to respond. Whether inside or outside, whenever she is within their sight, they line up in single file ready to take food out of her hand. "The boys" ignore anyone else that approaches them.

My wife was suddenly taken quite ill last fall and has spent most of the last six months in hospital and unable to feed "the boys". I have taken over the task. They have vigorously resisted being retrained. Even when I open the aquarium lid and hold the food over the water, they do not respond. Only when I actually put the food in the water do they show any interest at all.

From time to time, when she is convalescing at home, my wife will walk within 10 or 20 feet of "the boys" and they will dutifully line up waiting for her to feed them. She is unable to make the effort to reach their aquarium and feed them, but no matter how often she doesn't feed them, they still respond. No matter how often I do feed them, they ignore me. They are definitely her fish.

Contributor's Note

I usually write on Internet Marketing, but since Qassia put out a call for pet stories, I thought I'd share this little fun story even though it's totally unrelated to Internet Marketing.
